Samuel Muñeton Jr. has sat on both sides of the table — as a philanthropic funder and as a small business lender — building his career at the intersection of the two. That dual vantage point is uncommon in philanthropy. It is also exactly what the field needs more of.
As a Founder and Partner of Sovereign Good, Sam brings a career defined by his ability to see opportunity where others see complexity.
At the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, Sam managed a $13 million grant portfolio spanning journalism, veterans services, and government effectiveness. Sam conducted research, built relationships, and prepared the board-level recommendations that translate institutional intent into community investment. Within that portfolio, he directed several multi-million-dollar investments into the fledgling nonprofit news sector, working to stabilize an industry losing a reported two outlets a week in the United States. Earlier, as a small business lender and coach at Allies for Community Business, Sam deployed more than $1.8 million in micro-financing across Illinois and Indiana at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, distributed emergency capital on behalf of the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois, and sat one-on-one with entrepreneurs as they made decisions with real-life consequences.
What makes Sam an exceptional advisor is that he carries both philanthropic and small business experience. His power comes from preparing entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders for transformational investments while connecting funders to investment-ready opportunities.
A Chicago native and civic leader, Sam serves on the steering committees of Chicago Latines in Philanthropy, a 150-plus member network of Latine philanthropic professionals, and Nuestro Futuro, a nearly $10 million affinity fund at the Chicago Community Trust investing in immigration, early education, and mental health. Sam is an Associate Board Member of VOCEL, an early education nonprofit advancing play-based learning. He served as the Social Chair of Chicago Global Shapers, a World Economic Forum leadership program, where he built a year of retreats and programming for more than 30 members.
Sam is driven by individual and collective transformation, and by the work of designing curated experiences for the next generation of community-focused leaders. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Urban Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.
